digipack cd, der wahl-new-yorker chrome sparks veršffentlicht vielseitiges debźtalbum auf counter records! chrome sparks (aka jeremy malvin) wei§, wie er seine tracks im besten licht stehen lŠsst. sein selbstbetiteltes debźtalbum, das via counter records (ein ninja tune-sublabel) erscheint, sticht heraus mit einem funkelnden sound: eine euphonie aus hiphop, house und hell leuchtender arbeit am synthesizer. die platte ist das endergebnis jahrelanger arbeit in malvinÕs marinewerft (seinem studio in brooklyn) und einer abgelegen hźtte nšrdlich von new york. allein dort hat er einen ganzen monat allein zugebracht, um den ablenkungen der stadt zu entkommen und um diesen prozess zu destillieren, was anschlie§end zu einer periode intensiver kreativitŠt wurde. auf dem album selbst finden sich zusammenarbeiten mit dem australischen duo kllo (ghostly) und body languagesÕ angelica bess (die auch bereits mit machinedrum kollaborierte). das album ist sowohl ergebnis eines obsessiven produktionsansatzes als auch źber die rastlose jagd nach neuen ideen. sein kreative mentalitŠt wurde sowohl durch live-auftritte als auch studiogegniedel geprŠgt. sie ist das grundgerźst, das es ihm erlaubte, so viele diffuse ideen wirklichkeit werden zu lassen, die schlussendlich in einem hervorstechenden und vielfŠltigen debźtalbum resultieren.

zwei jahre lang hat der in san francisco beheimatete produzent giraffage in seinem schlafzimmer an seinem debźtalbum gewerkelt, das von seiner persšnlichen reise der selbstheilung erzŠhlt, bei dem jeder song eine andere periode in seinem leben reprŠsentiert. kaleidoskopische beats und vertrŠumte synth-pop- und r&b-melodien umrahmen das neue werk, bei dem japanese breakfast, body language s angelica bess und viele andere mitgewirkt haben. der sohn zweier taiwanesischer einwanderer ist schon frźh zur musik gekommen - einer deutlichen abweichung der sonstigen kulturellen erwartungen innerhalb seiner familie. doch schnell schaffte er mit ganz speziellen remixen seiner r&b-lieblingslieder, die im internet regelrecht explodierten, den aufstieg vom regional bekannten act, der blo§ in kleinen auskennerblogs beachtung fand, hin auf die bźhnen der weltweit grš§ten festivals.

exzellente compilation mit den lieblingssongs des jahres 2018 der britischen rough trade-shops. eine hochqualitative auswahl von echten musikkennern und -liebhaber/innen quer durch alle genres der aktuellen independent-szene - von den Überfliegern khruangbin über israel nash und baxter dury bis zu goat girl, bodega und den idles.

seit seinem start 2011 setzt der londoner online-radiosender nts (mit filialen in los angeles, shanghai und manchester) dank coolness, eklektizismus und diy-ethos neue maßstäbe im rundfunkbereich. Über 200 radio-djs aus aller herren länder sorgen für underground-dance-vibes, zusätzlich wird das programm regelmässig durch prominente gäste bereichert. der april 2018 gehörte dem britischen electronic-duo autechre, das an vier donnerstagen vier livesets mit komplett neuem material mit einer gesamtdauer von acht(!) stunden bestritt. dieses wird nun in form von deluxe-tonträgerformaten erhältlich, die alle auf ihre erstauflage limitiert bleiben werden. dreifaches 12 inch vinyl in bedruckten innentaschen in extra breitem cover-sleeve, inklusive download-code.

phonica records welcomes spanish producer extraordinaire pional to it’s main label with the ‘xme / one night stand’ 12”. pional is miguel barros and the madrid based musician has been producing for over a decade. with a string of well received solo releases on hivern discs, permanent vacation, young turks and counter, remixing the likes of the xx, chairlift, the rapture, prins thomas and john talabot (who he also co-wrote the incredible ‘fin’ album ender ‘so will be now...’ with) as well as djing around the world, pional has been keeping very busy indeed. for his phonica release he has produced two versions of two very special tracks. on the a-side, ‘xme’ is a melancholic and uplifting electronic excursion with delicate flourishes of it’s synthesised melody becoming a real ear-worm throughout its six and a half minutes. the slower and more foreboding ‘quiet ceremony’ reinterpretation takes the same melody in a darker direction. on the other side, ‘one night stand’ is a bumping, stripped back and moody club track with ghostly vocals floating above metallic pads rising to a release of energy and emotion. the ‘slow drumapella’ lowers the tempo and alters the feel of the track, reducing its elements to a bare-bones drum track with the vocal, fx and pads eventually coming to the fore.

following on from hashman deejay debuting his studio mody moniker as the first release on the newly formed sideline label headed up by salik, comes the second release by going good favourites e. corre and s. letelier (nummer) under a new alias detroit syndrome ... the label is keeping to the 3 track, low key presentation of the first release, with the focus being directed towards the music and continuing with a series that attempts to bring out a style that the artists may not necessarily be associated with. the direction given to the artists from the label is simple - do whatever you like, with the dance floor and longevity of music in mind.

it is time for the nang and rayko worlds to collide once more. the awesome madrid-based dj and producer is back with his second album on nang. as ever the grooves are wide, the beats are large and the musical elements ooze funk and nu disco sheen. thing open up with the title track and recent single no stopping. the track features the fine vocals from tania haroshka and it is a powerhouse of synth disco, electronic groove with real bass guitar and darting guitars giving it just a tint of miami vice sheen. 2016 single crazy is up next with it s catchy hooks and counter melodies. it comes with just the right amount of good-time groove to bring a smile to any face. things tone down robot life which is a creeping synth fest with wandering grooves and chunky drums. danielle moore features with a fine vocal on a pure rayko style classic cosmic pirate. muscular basses and darting guitars being deployed to maximum effect. ocarina of time is next with its layered complexity and stabby synth bass notes. tania haroshika returns for the final trio of tunes on the album. her fine vocals melding effortlessly with the slick production from our hero. first up is hot which builds the music slowly adding layers of multi tracked guitars and real bass before breaking forth into song. u sneaks in from the leftfield with its quirky strings and arpegiated synth-clavi lines. the album closes with the (slightly) melancholic and pensive groover space boat. tania adding a brooding vocal over a pulsating juno style bassline. a fine effort from our madrid based hero who once again shows everyone what this top-of-his-game dj-producer can do with some guitars and keyboards.

my third week in amsterdam i found my way to a small speakeasy tucked away amongst a labyrinth of cobbled alleyways. a doorman waved me inside, a knowing smile twisted around the half-smoked blunt hanging from his lips. i made my way down crooked, narrow stairs into a dimly lit room full of patrons nodding in the haze, feet tapping in time as they smiled and sipped at green-tinged cocktails. the soft sound of glasses clinking amongst murmured conversation served to accentuate the flaw in the scene before me, there was no music. realising i d paused in the entrance long enough to draw a few amused looks from the tables nearest me, i regained my composure and headed towards the bar, pondering the mystery before me. i reached the counter as the barman was mixing a cocktail and waited, but before i could order the man turned and placed a glass in front of me, the same half smile on his lips the doorman had shown me as he nodded at a specials board listing a pistachio sour. it sounded good so i took it to an empty seat and returned to my examination of the bizarre room. as i sat down a grinning girl next to me offered a toke on her joint, and as the no indoor-smoking law was clearly being ignored here i gratefully took a careless draw. as my coughing subsided i took a deep gulp of my drink, and suddenly music flooded my ears. my jaw dropped as i raised my head to see a guy on stage mesmerising the crowd with chill beats, house music permeating the formerly silent bar. the girl with the joint smiled at my amazement. his name s sune she told me, welcome to 8 till late.

ed davenport continues his full-spectrum techno experiments as inland with an elegant new ep on counterchange entitled coriolis. the title track coriolis is a moody 10 minute voyage with a morphing synth array at its core - bright, detuned stabs are layered upon tough rhythmic foundations. the jagged metallic lead builds, unearthing harmonic bleep accents and syncopated fx swells, before folding in on itself leaving the effective tribal drum section to ride on. d10d3 plows forward with an urgent staccato sequence, segueing into italo-horror filter sweeps and noise-laden moments of drama. finally tsereteli is a more reduced modern dub study, continuing ed s long running fascination with tranced-out time stretching and after-hours vibes. the 9th release on the label, the record features cover art by uk artist guy archard and is pressed on 180g vinyl.
